The 2026 psychological drama-thriller “Mother Mary” follows a world-famous pop icon, played by Anne Hathaway, as she confronts a collapse of identity while preparing for a career comeback after a viral incident from a previous tour.

The film centers on Hathaway’s character, Mother Mary, who searches for a sense of self as she prepares for a new stage performance. During this period, she reconnects with her former designer and estranged friend Sam, played by Michaela Coel, who once played a stabilizing role in her life before fame altered their relationship.

The story examines the characters’ past connection and present tension as they reunite. The narrative incorporates non-linear storytelling and symbolic imagery as it explores themes of identity, celebrity, and perception.

Hathaway portrays a pop star navigating personal and professional instability, while Coel plays Sam, whose perspective frames part of the narrative. The film also features an ensemble cast and incorporates music contributions from Charli XCX.

The production uses stylized visuals and performance sequences that emphasize the central character’s public persona and internal conflict. The film also draws on religious imagery, including references to the Virgin Mary, to frame its portrayal of celebrity and cultural idolization.

“Mother Mary,” distributed locally by Creazion Studios, is scheduled to open in Philippine cinemas on April 22.
