AUSTIN, Texas–San Marcos City Council in Texas is planning a transformational project to build a new city hall, which could potentially lead to the relocation of a dog park.

The proposed development, called the Hopkins Gateway, aims to revitalize 74 acres of city-owned land along Hopkins Street.

The new city hall is expected to be approximately 85,000 square feet.

This project seeks to address San Marcos’s population growth, which expanded from 34,000 in 1975 to an estimated 280,846 in 2024.

The planning stages are in progress, with a $4 million budget proposed for the fiscal year 2025.

A public vote is anticipated to release parkland for this development.

The relocation of a dog park is one of the options being considered to accommodate the new construction.

The project will include housing, retail, and a civic corridor as part of the mixed-use development.
