A former U.S. Senator from New Jersey has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison following his conviction on 16 charges, including bribery, extortion, conspiracy, and obstruction of justice.

The charges against Bob Menendez stemmed from his actions during his time in office, where he was found guilty of accepting over $1 million in bribes in exchange for political favors.

The bribes reportedly included luxury vacations, gifts, and cash payments from individuals and businesses.

Prosecutors argued that Menendez used his senatorial power to benefit himself and his associates, betraying the trust of the public.

Despite maintaining his innocence and claiming he was the victim of political persecution, the jury found the evidence against him overwhelming.

His defense team pleaded for leniency, citing his years of service, but the court imposed a sentence, reflecting the severity of the crimes and the breach of ethical standards expected from public officials.
