The Social Weather Stations (SWS) recently conducted a survey that revealed a significant portion of Filipinos remain hopeful as they approach the year 2025.

However, the survey also noted a rise in fear among the population, highlighting the complex emotions Filipinos feel as they prepare for the coming year.

The survey shows that 90% of respondents expressed hope for 2025, although this marks a decrease in optimism compared to previous years. This figure is the lowest since 2009, when only 89% of respondents reported feeling hopeful about the upcoming year.

Meanwhile, 10% of Filipinos said they would enter 2025 with fear, a notable increase from 3% in 2023. These statistics reflect a shift in public sentiment amid changing social and economic conditions.

SWS conducted the survey from December 12 to 18, 2024, involving adult Filipinos from various regions across the country. The survey provides a broad representation of the national mood ahead of the New Year.

The results suggest that while hope remains the dominant emotion, the increase in fear signals a change in perception among Filipinos.

This shift may stem from recent socio-economic developments both domestically and internationally, as well as uncertainties that have emerged over the past few years.

Inflation and economic stability likely play significant roles in shaping perceptions. With rising prices and economic pressures, many Filipinos find it difficult to maintain the same level of optimism as before. The government has worked on measures to address these issues, and its efforts could influence future surveys.

Political factors may also contribute to fluctuations in public sentiment. Local and national policies, along with political stability, might affect how people feel about the future.

The outcome of upcoming elections and potential changes in leadership could further alter public opinion in the coming months.

Despite these challenges, the resilience of the Filipino spirit remains evident in the survey’s findings. The fact that a large majority still holds hope for 2025 underscores a deep-seated optimism among the populace, indicating that many believe positive changes are possible in the near future.

As 2025 approaches, the SWS survey offers valuable insights into the collective mindset of Filipinos. It highlights the importance of addressing both the hopes and fears of the population to create a more stable and prosperous future. The evolving dynamics of public sentiment will continue to drive discussions as the New Year unfolds.
