SAN MARCOS, Texas — The UTSA Roadrunners defeated the Texas State Bobcats 31-26 Saturday in the Battle for I-35 rivalry, earning their 100th program win and improving to 2-0 this season.
UTSA rallied in the fourth quarter after Texas State took a 26-23 lead on Jacob Bonilla’s 26-yard field goal.
The Roadrunners converted two fourth downs on their next possession before Brandon High Jr. scored on a 25-yard touchdown run with 14 seconds remaining. Michael Petro then kicked a field goal to secure the victory.
UTSA quarterback Owen McCown completed 28 of 42 passes for 214 yards and one touchdown. Texas State quarterback Brad Jackson completed 17 of 30 passes for 195 yards and one touchdown and threw two interceptions.
The Bobcats took a 17-7 lead into halftime after Jackson scored on a six-yard rushing touchdown and Bonilla made a 51-yard field goal near the end of the second quarter.
UTSA opened the scoring when McCown connected with tight end Brandon Young Jr. on a one-yard touchdown pass.
The victory marked UTSA’s third win in four games at San Marcos and its eighth meeting with Texas State.
Texas State entered the game after a 59-7 loss to Texas last week, while UTSA opened its season with a 45-16 win over UTRGV.
UTSA will visit Texas on Saturday, Sept. 19, for a 7 p.m. game in Austin.
