HOUSTON — The Houston Health Department and Harris County Public Health have reported a combined 34 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness linked to consuming raw, unwashed produce, health officials announced this week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said cyclosporiasis is caused by the parasite Cyclospora, which can contaminate fresh produce. The agency has reported at least 145 cases nationwide and no deaths.

Harris County Public Health reported 18 confirmed cases since the beginning of the year. A county spokesperson said the total is higher than usual for this time of year, noting that Texas typically sees seasonal increases in cyclosporiasis cases from April through August. Symptoms usually develop two to 14 days after exposure.

The Houston Health Department reported 16 confirmed cases within the city.

Houston Health Department Director Dr. Theresa Tran said the city has not identified an increase in cases compared with recent years.

“We have not identified an increased trend this year in the Houston-Harris County region compared to the past several years,” Tran said. “We have not found a common source for our cases or any linkages between our local cases and the other cases around the county; our investigations will continue throughout the summer.”

Health officials said most people recover without significant health effects.

The Houston Health Department and Harris County Public Health advised residents to reduce the risk of infection by thoroughly washing raw fruits and vegetables with water, washing hands with soap and water before handling food, refrigerating cut or cooked produce within two hours, and cleaning cutting boards, utensils and food preparation surfaces.

Tran also urged Houston residents and healthcare providers to report laboratory-confirmed cases through the Houston Health Department’s foodborne illness complaint system to assist with ongoing investigations.
