SANTIAGO, Chile — Hundreds of BTS fans marched through the Chilean capital on Sunday to protest the government’s decision to stop the K-pop group’s three scheduled “Arirang” world tour concerts at Estadio Nacional in October.
Fans, collectively known as Army, gathered in Santiago wearing purple clothing, carrying purple balloons and holding placards urging authorities to allow BTS to perform at the national stadium. The demonstrators marched to the La Moneda presidential palace while singing the group’s songs.
The protests followed the Chilean government’s decision to block the concerts, which were scheduled for Oct. 14, 16 and 17. BTS added the Oct. 14 show after tickets for the Oct. 16 and 17 performances sold out shortly after sales opened in April.
Sports Minister Natalia Duco said the decision does not permanently cancel the concerts but acknowledged that Santiago and nearby cities, including Vina del Mar and Concepcion, currently have no alternative venue large enough to accommodate the expected audience.
The National Sports Institute, which authorizes the use of Estadio Nacional, said BTS’ planned 360-degree stage would place about 600 tons of weight on the field. The agency said the setup could damage the playing surface and affect upcoming sporting events scheduled at the stadium.
The Chilean government also criticized concert promoter DG Medios for selling tickets before obtaining approval to use the venue.
