WASHINGTON, D.C. — Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were not injured after a shooting incident on Saturday night at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., where a suspect was taken into custody, according to the U.S. Secret Service.

The Secret Service said the shooting occurred at a security screening area near the entrance of the venue, the Washington Hilton hotel. Trump said a Secret Service agent was struck in a bulletproof vest and is in stable condition.

Authorities detained a suspect at the scene. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said officials will file charges.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots shortly after 8:30 p.m. ET. Security personnel evacuated attendees from the ballroom, where journalists, government officials and guests had gathered, including JD Vance and members of the administration.

Video from inside the venue showed security officers escorting Trump and the first lady from the stage as personnel instructed attendees to remain down.

Trump later said in a social media post that law enforcement officers responded quickly and that the suspect was apprehended. He said officials would determine whether to continue the event.

Law enforcement officers moved several cabinet officials, including Lee Zeldin, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Kash Patel, to secure locations inside the hotel. Trump later said all cabinet members were safe.

Several lawmakers, including Sheldon Whitehouse and Jared Moskowitz, left the venue following the incident.

Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, addressed attendees after the incident and said the group would reschedule the event.

Officials have not released additional details about the suspect or a motive.
