A New Orleans congregation, Smoking for Jesus Ministry, has marked 20 years since relocating to Burnet, Texas, in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Their journey began with the devastation caused by the hurricanes, prompting them to seek refuge and eventually settle in Central Texas. The church, led by Pastor Willie Monnet Sr., has established itself in Burnet with the establishment of a church, school, and community support.

Approximately 200 members of Smoking for Jesus Ministry fled New Orleans as Hurricane Katrina approached, seeking safety in various locations before settling in Burnet County. The congregation’s move significantly influenced Burnet’s demographics and economic landscape.

Pastor Willie Monnet Sr. played a pivotal role in guiding his congregation through the challenging transition. He led them through multiple relocations before finding a permanent home in Burnet. Under his leadership, the church built new facilities that include a worship center and a school, providing education and spiritual guidance to community members.

The relocation and establishment of the congregation in Burnet were not without challenges. Congregation members recall the difficulties they faced during the hurricanes and the subsequent journey. Many lost their homes and possessions, and the emotional toll of displacement weighed heavily on them. Despite these hardships, the congregation persisted, drawing strength from their faith and community bonds.

In Burnet, Smoking for Jesus Ministry has become a significant part of the local community. The church has not only provided spiritual support but has also contributed to the area’s economic development. The establishment of the church and school has created jobs and attracted new residents to the region, enhancing the town’s growth and diversity.

The church’s school offers education from kindergarten through high school, serving both congregation members and the broader community. It emphasizes academic excellence, character development, and spiritual growth. The school has become a vital component of the congregation’s mission, preparing students for future success.

Members of the congregation have shared personal stories of resilience and determination. They reflect on the strength they found in their faith and each other during the challenging relocation process. These stories highlight the congregation’s commitment to rebuilding and thriving in their new environment.

The congregation’s journey has not only transformed their lives but has also impacted the larger Burnet community. Their arrival brought new cultural influences and perspectives, enriching the town’s social fabric. The congregation actively engages in community service and outreach programs, fostering a spirit of unity and cooperation.

Smoking for Jesus Ministry’s anniversary celebration serves as a reminder of the enduring strength and resilience of the congregation. Despite the challenges posed by the hurricanes, they have built a new home in Burnet, where they continue to grow and contribute to the community. Their story is a testament to the power of faith and community in overcoming adversity and rebuilding lives.
