MANILA, Philippines — The Supreme Court on Friday, August 15, upheld the authority of the Philippine Senate to issue a subpoena against former Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo amid ongoing investigations into alleged Chinese espionage activities.

In its ruling, the high court affirmed the validity of the Senate’s subpoena, citing the chamber’s constitutional mandate to conduct inquiries in aid of legislation, particularly on matters involving national security.

The subpoena compels Guo to appear before the Senate for questioning.

The allegations against Guo involve purported links to activities that may have compromised Philippine national security. Details of the accusations have not been publicly disclosed in full, but the Senate’s inquiry seeks to determine the extent of the alleged espionage and its possible impact on the country.

Guo has not yet issued a public response to either the allegations or the Supreme Court’s decision.

The Senate continues its probe and is expected to call additional witnesses and gather further evidence in the coming weeks.
