HOUSTON, Texas — Consul General Gunther Sales on Monday hosted officials from the Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc. (GKCDFI) at the Philippine Consulate General in Houston to discuss education, food security, and development initiatives in the Philippines.
Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, GKCDFI Board Member and former Ateneo de Manila University president, and Mark Cruz, Director of the School for Experiential and Entrepreneurial Development (SEED) Philippines, led the delegation.
They were joined by Gawad Kalinga USA Executive Director Carol Tulud, GK Texas Area Director Ceferino Amores, members of GK-Texas, and several Ateneo alumni based in Texas.
The meeting took place at the Consulate’s Mabini Hall as part of Gawad Kalinga’s ten-city outreach in the United States. Houston is the fifth stop in the series.
Participants discussed Gawad Kalinga’s programs focused on education and agriculture as tools for nation-building. They also highlighted the foundation’s transition from housing projects to capacity building and leadership development over the last three decades.
Consul General Sales shared the Consulate’s current initiatives to build partnerships with institutions in Texas and other U.S. states under its jurisdiction. He and the delegation explored possible areas of cooperation to support development programs in the Philippines.
