CASTROVILLE, Texas — Roman Barron, 20, died early Sunday after a single-vehicle crash and fire along U.S. Highway 90 East, according to Castroville police.

Officers responded at about 3:08 a.m. to the 800 block of the highway after receiving reports of a crash. Police said they had earlier received information about a vehicle traveling westbound at a high rate of speed near a Walmart along the highway. Medina County dispatch later received a call reporting that a vehicle had struck a tree.

Responding officers located a black Dodge Durango that had collided with a tree. While searching the area, officers saw that the vehicle had caught fire. An officer extinguished the flames.

Authorities said Barron was found inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials said they notified next of kin.

Police said speed is a possible factor in the crash, and the investigation is ongoing.
