MANILA, Philippines — Alicia Alonzo, a distinguished figure in the Philippine entertainment industry, has opened up about her transformative journey from the spotlight of show business to the serene life of a monastic lay associate. During an interview with broadcast journalist Julius Babao, Alonzo candidly discussed her decision to reside in the Caryana monastic community located in Magalang, Pampanga.

The former actress, who has officially retired from her career in showbiz, expressed a profound sense of happiness and peace within the monastic environment. She emphasized the simplicity of life in the community, highlighting that unlike other monastic establishments with nuns, Caryana is composed of ordinary individuals seeking spiritual growth.

Alonzo’s connection with the monastery dates back to 2000, but it was only two years ago that she decided to become a full-time resident. Reflecting on her life, Alonzo articulated a need to devote herself to spiritual pursuits, stating, “I’ve always done what I loved throughout my life, but now I feel whatever remains should be dedicated to Him.”

Before her illustrious career spanning more than 140 films and television shows, Alonzo worked as a flight stewardess for Philippine Airlines. Her last screen appearance was in the 2019 series “Kara Mia.”

The 79-year-old actress has a son, Jon Hernandez, with the late actor Ross Rival, who was the elder brother to actor-politician Phillip Salvador. Hernandez tragically passed away in a car accident at the age of 23. Alonzo recounted that her son had urged her return to the Philippines from the United States to work on a film together shortly before his untimely death. This loss profoundly impacted her, leading to a spiritual awakening and healing through conversations with the founder of the monastery.

Alonzo also touched on her familial connections, specifically her relationship with actress Maja Salvador. She credited her son Jon for fostering a bond between them, revealing that Maja and her siblings affectionately refer to her as “Mama Alice.”

Furthermore, Alonzo shared her meaningful friendship with fellow actor Lito Legaspi, whom she accompanied on a spiritual journey at Caryana. Legaspi, who was seeking spiritual renewal, lived at Caryana until his passing in 2019 and was laid to rest there. Alonzo fondly described their platonic friendship, centered on shared faith and spiritual discussions.

Alicia Alonzo’s transition from the entertainment industry to monastic life underscores her quest for personal and spiritual fulfillment, marking a poignant chapter in her life’s narrative.
