WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man known for his involvement in the 2016 “Pizzagate” shooting at a Washington, D.C., pizzeria, was fatally shot by police during a traffic stop earlier this week.

According to authorities, Edgar Maddison Welch, 47, reportedly attempted to flee the scene during the stop, prompting officers to discharge their firearms. The incident occurred on Monday, with details emerging in local reports on Thursday.

Welch gained notoriety on December 4, 2016, when he entered Comet Ping Pong, a D.C. pizzeria, armed with a rifle.

Acting on the debunked “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory, which falsely claimed the restaurant was a hub for a child sex trafficking ring involving prominent Democrats, Welch fired shots inside the establishment.

Although no one was injured, the incident highlighted the dangers of conspiracy theories. Welch later expressed regret for his actions and was sentenced to four years in prison for assault and firearms charges.

The recent shooting unfolded during a routine traffic stop. Police allege Welch failed to comply with officers’ instructions and attempted to drive away, leading to a confrontation. The situation escalated, and Welch was shot. He was pronounced dead two days later.

The police department has launched an investigation into the incident, and the involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol. Officials have yet to release further details about the traffic stop or Welch’s actions leading up to the shooting.

The “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory, which fueled Welch’s 2016 actions, emerged during the 2016 U.S. presidential election and falsely accused Comet Ping Pong and several high-profile individuals of criminal activity.

Despite being thoroughly debunked, it gained traction online, leading to harassment and threats against the pizzeria’s staff and owner, James Alefantis.

As the investigation continues, authorities are gathering evidence and witness accounts to determine the circumstances surrounding Welch’s death.
