Representatives from Ukraine and Russia met in Istanbul, Turkey, this week to conduct peace talks following recent military operations by both sides.

The discussions, facilitated by the United States, aim to reduce tensions and explore a negotiated resolution to the ongoing conflict.

Over the weekend, Ukraine carried out drone attacks on several Russian air bases deep inside Russian territory, including locations in Siberia’s Irkutsk region. Ukrainian officials reported that the strikes caused an estimated $7 billion in damages, targeting Russian strategic bombers.

In response, Russia launched drone attacks on Ukrainian targets, with reports indicating some strikes affected civilian areas.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has been ongoing since February 2022, resulting in numerous casualties and widespread displacement. Previous peace talks have not produced a lasting agreement.
