The Texas Department of Transportation is standing by its winter storm road treatment strategy as Houston prepares for potentially freezing temperatures.
TxDOT crews began applying a liquid brine solution to bridges and overpasses across six counties on Thursday, continuing through Friday, to prevent ice from forming on elevated roadways. The agency says bridges and overpasses are most vulnerable to early freezing and pose higher risks for drivers.
The preparations faced criticism from John McClory, interim director of Pittsburgh Public Works, who said applying brine before rain can reduce its effectiveness, as precipitation may wash the solution off roads before temperatures drop.
TxDOT spokesperson Barbi Hall said the agency is adjusting operations in real time, applying brine in phases and prioritizing high-traffic areas. Hall added that sand trucks will be deployed if ice forms, helping vehicles maintain traction.
TxDOT officials emphasized that crews will remain in the field throughout the storm, coordinating with local authorities and emergency responders. Drivers are urged to monitor weather updates, check travel advisories, and exercise caution on elevated roadways during the freeze.
