LOS ANGELES – The first fully online voting project for overseas Filipinos recorded low voter turnout, according to reports from consulates around the world, including the Philippine Consulate General in Los Angeles.
Adelio S. Cruz, Consul General in Los Angeles, confirmed on Monday that only 1,131 of the 34,557 registered voters in Southern California, parts of Nevada, and Arizona participated in the digital election. This figure reflects a turnout rate of just 3.27 percent.
The online-only voting system, launched for the first time in this election cycle, was implemented to improve accessibility and streamline the voting process for Filipinos living abroad.
Despite these efforts, officials observed a similarly low participation rate across other consular jurisdictions worldwide.
Authorities had anticipated higher voter engagement due to the convenience and accessibility of the digital platform. However, the unexpectedly low turnout has prompted officials to evaluate the barriers that may have prevented wider participation.
Cruz acknowledged the outcome and stated that the consulate plans to examine the challenges encountered by voters during the process. Officials are considering adjustments to improve overseas voter engagement and ease of access in future elections.
