WASHINGTON — President Trump signed an executive order on Tuesday creating the Genesis initiative, which directs federal agencies, laboratories, and universities to use artificial intelligence to speed scientific research across multiple fields.

A senior White House official said the initiative will coordinate federal scientific resources at a scale not seen since the Apollo program. The order directs participating institutions to apply AI in health research, environmental analysis, defense projects, and technology development.

The order states that Genesis will support efforts to shorten the time between scientific discovery and real-world application. Agencies will use AI tools to process data, model outcomes, and manage research tasks.

The administration plans to form partnerships with private companies that develop AI systems. These companies will provide tools and technical support for projects in medicine, environmental research, and national security.

The executive order takes effect immediately.
