AUSTIN, Texas — The Travis County Medical Examiner has ruled that Brianna Aguilera died by suicide, clearing the way for Austin police to close their investigation into her death. Aguilera fell from a 17-story balcony in West Campus late last year.

Three law enforcement sources confirmed the ruling to KVUE Senior Reporter Tony Plohetski.

Aguilera’s death had sparked widespread speculation of foul play. Her family hired Houston attorney Tony Buzbee, who has repeatedly criticized the Austin police investigation as inadequate and incomplete.

The medical examiner’s conclusion was based on information provided by Austin police as well as the examiner’s independent investigation. The full report is expected to be released Friday.
