LOS ANGELES — Actor Tim Curry, who became a cult icon as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and played memorable villains and eccentric characters on stage and screen, died Tuesday night at his Los Angeles home. He was 80.
Curry’s longtime manager and friend, Marcia Hurwitz, confirmed his death but did not disclose a cause.
Curry rose to international fame after originating the role of Frank-N-Furter in the stage musical “The Rocky Horror Show,” which premiered in London in 1973. He reprised the role in the 1975 film adaptation, which became a cult classic and introduced generations of audiences to his flamboyant performance and distinctive voice.
The role became one of Curry’s defining performances as “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” developed a devoted following through midnight screenings and audience participation. The musical also became known for its LGBTQ+ representation and songs such as “The Time Warp.”
Curry continued his theater career on Broadway, earning Tony Award nominations for “Amadeus,” “My Favorite Year” and “Spamalot.” He played King Arthur in the 2005 Broadway production of “Spamalot” and appeared in other major stage productions, including “Travesties” and “Amadeus.”
His film credits included the 1990 miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s “It,” “The Hunt for Red October,” “The Three Musketeers,” “Clue,” “Annie,” “Congo” and “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.” In “Home Alone 2,” he played the concierge at New York’s Plaza Hotel.
Curry also became a prolific voice actor, appearing in animated productions including “Star Wars: The Clone Wars,” “The Wild Thornberrys” and “The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius.” He won a Daytime Emmy in 1991 for voicing Captain Hook in “Peter Pan and the Pirates.”
In 2012, Curry suffered a stroke that left him using a wheelchair. He later returned to acting, including a role in the 2024 film “Stream.”
Curry was born in Cheshire, England, the son of a Navy chaplain and a school secretary. He studied drama at the University of Birmingham before beginning his professional career in London’s West End.
In his 2025 memoir, “Vagabond,” Curry reflected on the difference between his public roles and his private identity.
“I like playing the more curious corners of the human mind and human behavior,” Curry told The Associated Press in 1993, “partly because they’re a tad more interesting.”
Curry never married and had no children. He maintained a private personal life while continuing to connect with fans who embraced his work across generations.
