Thousands of endangered tortoises were rescued from a sanctuary in Madagascar after heavy rainfall caused flooding, displacing the reptiles.

Sanctuary staff, local authorities, and volunteers quickly launched a coordinated rescue operation to relocate the tortoises to safer areas as floodwaters overwhelmed the sanctuary.

The tortoises, ranging from young adults to those around 50 years old, were at risk as rising waters swept through their habitat.

Boats and makeshift rafts were used to reach the flooded areas and help move the animals to higher ground.

The flooding incident has raised concerns about the vulnerability of endangered species to natural disasters, especially in Madagascar, a region known for its unique wildlife.

Following the rescue, veterinarians assessed the tortoises’ health, and rehabilitation efforts are underway to ensure their recovery.

The Madagascar government, along with international conservation groups, has committed to improving infrastructure and disaster response plans for wildlife sanctuaries.
