SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County officials are working to process more than 45,000 unprocessed voter registration applications ahead of the November 5 general election, following integration issues with the Texas Secretary of State’s voting system.
The backlog began after the county transitioned to a state-run voter registration platform earlier this year. The switch occurred when the county’s previous vendor ended its operations. As a result, the county elections department has struggled to keep pace with incoming applications.
Elections Administrator Michele Carew said the department aims to clear the backlog before early voting begins on October 20. To meet the deadline, the county has hired temporary staff and is seeking approval to implement VR Systems, an alternative platform designed to improve processing efficiency.
Commissioner Rebeca Clay-Flores urged immediate action to ensure that all eligible voters are registered in time to participate in the election.
Officials said they are working closely with the Texas Secretary of State’s Office to accelerate approval of VR Systems. The county plans to implement the new system before the next election cycle to prevent future delays.
As the voter registration deadline approaches, the elections department continues to process applications and coordinate efforts with state authorities to avoid disruptions to the electoral process.
