NEW YORK — Nick Jonas, renowned for his multifaceted career in music and acting, brings his talent and passion to Broadway as he stars in “The Last Five Years” alongside Tony Award-winner Adrienne Warren. This Broadway debut marks a significant milestone for the musical, which has traveled a unique path from its inception in 2001 to its current prestigious stage at the Hudson Theatre.

“The Last Five Years,” created by acclaimed composer and writer Jason Robert Brown, first captivated audiences with its debut in Illinois, followed by an off-Broadway run in 2002. The production quickly earned a devoted following, becoming a staple in regional theaters and even inspiring a film adaptation featuring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan. Its cult-like status has now culminated in a much-anticipated Broadway premiere.

Jonas was first introduced to the musical’s profound storytelling and score as a young performer on Broadway. “I remember hearing the cast recording and falling in love with it,” he recalls. Now, he steps into the role of Jamie, an aspiring novelist, while Warren portrays Cathy, a budding actor. The story unfolds through their contrasting perspectives over five years, exploring themes of love, ambition, and heartbreak.

Director Whitney White, a Tony-nominated visionary, helms the production, lauding it as a quintessential American masterpiece. “In an era where many musicals stem from other media, this stands out as a powerful original work,” she asserts. White’s dedication to preserving the show’s intimate and compelling narrative is evident in her approach, which emphasizes the emotional depths and real-life challenges faced by the characters.

The musical delves into the complexities of Jamie and Cathy’s marriage, particularly highlighting how professional successes and failures can strain personal relationships. As Jamie’s career flourishes, Cathy’s stagnates, leading to poignant and relatable struggles. “I will not fail so that you can be comfortable, Cathy,” Jamie’s character declares, encapsulating the tension at the heart of their story.

Adrienne Warren, who gained recognition for her role as Tina Turner on Broadway, discovered “The Last Five Years” during her college years. Her journey from fan to star of the show illustrates the magnetic allure of Brown’s music and storytelling. “I always loved the music and now, being part of it is a dream,” she shares.

The Broadway production features an updated score and contemporary references, enhancing its resonance with modern audiences. Brown’s willingness to adapt the musical for a larger stage and current times speaks to the timeless nature of its themes. Despite initial reservations about bringing the show to Broadway, Brown embraces the opportunity to share his creation with a wider audience.

As audiences prepare to experience this emotional rollercoaster, White, Jonas, and Warren emphasize the importance of understanding both characters without bias. “I’ve been both Jamie and Cathy in different stages of my life,” White reflects, underscoring the universal appeal of their journey.

With its premiere set for Sunday, “The Last Five Years” promises to captivate theatergoers, offering a poignant exploration of love and life. The production not only celebrates its path to Broadway but also reaffirms the power of intimate storytelling in a grand setting.
