AMARILLO, Texas — Much of Texas will face triple-digit temperatures Monday as forecasters warn of a low risk of severe thunderstorms in the western Panhandle, where temperatures could reach about 102 degrees.
The National Weather Service office in Amarillo said storms could develop from the late afternoon through the evening, mainly across the western Panhandles.
Forecasters said storms could produce hail up to 0.75 inches in diameter, wind gusts of up to 70 mph and a low tornado risk. Areas north and west of Amarillo have the greatest chance of rain and severe weather.
The storm threat could begin around 4 p.m. Monday.
Elsewhere in Texas, forecasters expect dangerous heat to dominate the start of the week.
The National Weather Service office in Dallas-Fort Worth forecasts a high near 109 degrees in the metroplex, with heat index values approaching 115 degrees.
Forecasters said an upper-level disturbance and weak cold front could bring more clouds and a chance of rain during the latter half of the week, which could lower temperatures.
The National Weather Service office serving Austin and San Antonio has a heat advisory in effect, with temperatures expected to reach about 103 degrees Monday.
In Southeast Texas, temperatures could reach around 100 degrees.
Forecasters urged residents to take precautions against the heat while monitoring weather conditions in areas where storms could develop.
