Texas DPS officer dies after crash in Childress County

A Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol trooper died on Wednesday, June 17, in a crash during a traffic stop attempt in Childress County, Texas, according to DPS.

The department identified the victim as Trooper Sergio Romero, 27, who died after a collision along US-287 near Childress while attempting to conduct a traffic stop.

DPS said Romero was pursuing a traffic stop when a truck-tractor semi-trailer pulled out in front of his patrol unit, causing the crash. Authorities said they continue to investigate the incident.

DPS Colonel Freeman F. Martin said the department mourns Romero’s death and described his service as courageous and selfless.

Romero previously served with the Hall County Sheriff’s Office before joining DPS as part of Class B-2025, according to the agency.

DPS said Romero is survived by his wife and two young sons.
