Texas Democratic state legislators are expanding their outreach efforts beyond state lines as they navigate the contentious redistricting process currently underway in Texas.

Facing limited influence in the Republican-controlled legislature, Democratic lawmakers have sought support from political allies in California and Illinois.

Redistricting, conducted every ten years following the census, determines legislative and congressional district boundaries. The outcome can significantly affect which party holds political power in both state and federal elections.

In Texas, the redistricting process has sparked debate, with Democrats raising concerns about proposals they say could lead to partisan gerrymandering.

To strengthen their position, Texas Democrats have traveled to states led by Democratic majorities, including California and Illinois. In California, legislators have met with lawmakers, strategists, and advocacy groups to discuss tactics and resources that might support their efforts.

In Illinois, conversations have focused on forming partnerships and exchanging insights into political organizing and district mapping.

Democratic lawmakers argue that proposed maps in Texas risk diminishing voter representation and favor one party over others. They assert that engaging with leaders in other states provides opportunities to develop new strategies and amplify calls for fairer redistricting processes.

Republican leaders in Texas defend the redistricting process, stating that it reflects population changes and voting trends. They maintain that the proposals aim to ensure balanced representation based on demographic data.
