Harris County officials on Dec. 17, continued a $1.3 million immigration legal services program for undocumented residents after a state district court in Houston rejected a lawsuit by Attorney General Ken Paxton seeking to stop it.
The lawsuit challenged the county’s allocation of funds to nonprofits providing legal representation to undocumented immigrants in federal immigration proceedings. Paxton argued the program violated Texas law and interfered with federal enforcement.
The court rejected the request, allowing Harris County to continue distributing the funds. County officials and nonprofits will maintain the program while monitoring potential appeals.
