Taylor Swift is facing a federal lawsuit filed March 30 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California by Las Vegas performer Maren Wade, who alleges trademark infringement over the title “The Life of a Showgirl.”
Wade, an entertainer, writer, and former America’s Got Talent contestant, claims Swift’s project title infringes on her brand “Confessions of a Showgirl,” which she launched in 2014 as a column before expanding it into a podcast, live show, and touring production.
The lawsuit states that Wade registered the “Confessions of a Showgirl” trademark in 2015 for live performances and entertainment services. Her legal team argues that the similarity in phrasing between the two titles could cause consumer confusion and dilute her brand.
The complaint also says the United States Patent and Trademark Office previously rejected an application to trademark “The Life of a Showgirl,” citing similarity to Wade’s mark. It alleges that Swift and associated entities, including Universal Music Group, continued using the title in marketing and merchandise.
Wade is seeking an injunction to stop further use of the title and is requesting monetary damages.
Representatives for Swift and her label have not issued public statements on the lawsuit.
