TAIPEI, Taiwan —Taiwan’s government has raised alarm over a rise in China’s disinformation efforts aimed at undermining the island’s democracy and its relations with the United States.

According to Taiwan’s National Security Bureau, instances of disinformation originating from China increased by 60% last year.

This misinformation, primarily disseminated through popular social media platforms like Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), has raised concerns about its potential impact on public trust, democratic institutions, and international relations.

The disinformation campaign is part of China’s broader strategy to influence Taiwan’s political landscape and weaken its democratic systems.

The false or biased content often appears to come from neutral sources, including independent media outlets or influencers, making it more challenging to identify and counter.

The National Security Bureau also pointed to the use of artificial intelligence to create and spread misleading content, further complicating the issue.

This rise in disinformation is not only a concern for Taiwan but also has regional implications. Experts suggest that China’s tactics are part of a larger pattern of influence operations designed to destabilize Taiwan while shaping perceptions across the Asia-Pacific region to align with China’s geopolitical interests.

In response, Taiwan has ramped up efforts to combat these disinformation campaigns. The government has launched initiatives to raise awareness about the dangers of fake news, including educational programs aimed at improving media literacy among citizens.

These programs encourage the public to critically evaluate the information they encounter online. Additionally, Taiwan is collaborating with international partners to develop strategies to counter disinformation and strengthen democratic resilience in the face of these ongoing challenges.
