LOS ANGELES — Director Steven Spielberg has joined the ranks of EGOT winners after earning his first Grammy Award on Sunday.

Spielberg received the honor for Best Music Film as a producer of the 2024 documentary “Music for John Williams.” The award marked both his first Grammy nomination and victory, announced during the ceremony’s pre-broadcast event where most categories were presented.

At 79, Spielberg becomes one of a select group in the entertainment industry to complete the EGOT — winning an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony over the course of a career. Fewer than two dozen performers and creators have reached the milestone.

In a statement, Spielberg said the recognition underscores the lasting cultural impact of composer John Williams, with whom he has collaborated for decades. He described Williams’ influence on music and film as unparalleled and expressed pride in being part of the documentary directed by Laurent Bouzereau.

Spielberg’s career has long been defined by major awards. He has earned multiple Primetime Emmys for projects including “Band of Brothers,” “The Pacific,” “Taken,” and “Animaniacs.” His Academy Awards include two Oscars for “Schindler’s List” and another for “Saving Private Ryan.” He also won a Tony Award as a producer of the Broadway musical “A Strange Loop.”

The EGOT designation is considered one of the entertainment industry’s highest achievements, signifying success across television, music, film and theater. Recent recipients include Jennifer Hudson, Viola Davis, Elton John, and songwriting duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who completed the feat in 2024.

The Grammy Awards featured a wide slate of nominees and performers across genres, with several high-profile artists taking part in the ceremony. Spielberg’s latest recognition adds another milestone to a career spanning more than five decades in filmmaking.
