Kenneth Colley, the English actor best known for portraying Admiral Piett in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died at the age of 87. His family confirmed that he passed away peacefully.

Colley gained international recognition for his role as the quietly authoritative Admiral Piett, appearing in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). He remains the only Imperial officer in the franchise to survive across two films, earning the admiration of fans for his nuanced and composed portrayal.

Born in Manchester, England, Colley trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and enjoyed a career that spanned stage, film, and television. Prior to his Star Wars fame, he established himself as a versatile performer through a range of dramatic and comedic roles in British productions during the 1960s and 1970s.

His extensive film credits include roles in Monty Python’s Life of Brian (1979), The Music Lovers (1971), and Nicholas and Alexandra (1971). He was widely respected for his ability to bring depth and complexity to both supporting and leading roles.

In addition to his screen work, Colley remained dedicated to the theater throughout his career, appearing in numerous stage productions across the United Kingdom. Colleagues described him as a committed actor and a consummate professional, well regarded in the British acting community.

Though most closely associated with Star Wars, Colley also made memorable appearances in a variety of British television series and historical dramas, often cast in roles of gravitas and authority. His portrayal of emotionally layered and intellectually driven characters solidified his reputation as a reliable and impactful performer.

Following news of his passing, fans and peers paid tribute to Colley’s work, particularly his contributions to one of the most influential film franchises in history. Tributes have poured in from across the world, with many sharing their appreciation for his iconic role and his wider body of work.

Colley is survived by his children and grandchildren, who described him as a devoted father and grandfather. His family has requested privacy as they mourn his loss and stated that details of a memorial service will be shared at a later time.

Kenneth Colley’s passing marks the end of a distinguished career that left a lasting mark on both stage and screen. His legacy, particularly his role in Star Wars, continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
