“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” opened with an estimated $355 million in ticket sales across the United States and Canada, giving the Sony release the second-biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

The film came within $2 million of “Avengers: Endgame,” which opened with $357 million in 2019. “Brand New Day” also generated an estimated $572 million internationally, including $121 million in China, for a worldwide opening of $927 million.

Only “Avengers: Endgame,” which opened globally with $1.2 billion, has recorded a larger worldwide debut.

The film, starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker, opened Friday with $168 million from 4,487 theaters in the U.S. and Canada. That figure surpassed “Endgame’s” $157 million opening-day record.

“Brand New Day” also set a record for Sony Pictures’ biggest opening.

The film replaced Holland’s previous standalone Spider-Man movie, “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” as the second-biggest domestic opening. “No Way Home” debuted with $260 million in December 2021.

“Avengers: Infinity War,” which opened with $257 million in 2018, and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which earned $247 million in 2015, round out the top five domestic openings.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, “Brand New Day” reportedly cost $225 million to produce, excluding marketing expenses. The film has received a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences gave it an “A” CinemaScore.

The strong debut followed the release of Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” which stars Holland and Zendaya and placed second at the domestic box office with $51 million in its third weekend. “The Odyssey” has earned $395.5 million domestically and $911.4 million worldwide.

“Toy Story 5” ranked third with $6.3 million, followed by “Minions & Monsters” with $5.8 million and “Moana” with $5.3 million.

The strong performance of “Brand New Day” could help push the North American summer box office past $4 billion for the first time since 2023, according to Rentrak marketplace trends analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
