LOS ANGELES — “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” remained No. 1 at the North American box office in its fourth weekend, earning $39 million from 4,006 theaters as “The Odyssey” became Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film domestically and internationally.
The Sony release has now earned more than $854.9 million in North America. It is on pace to surpass “Avengers: Endgame” as the second-highest-grossing domestic film, behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which holds the record at $936.7 million.
“Insidious: Out of the Further” opened at No. 2 with $25.3 million from 3,303 theaters. The sixth installment in the horror franchise earned another $35 million internationally. Its $18 million production budget makes it the most expensive film in the series.
“The Odyssey” placed third after earning $19.5 million in its sixth weekend, bringing its North American total to nearly $539.1 million. The film surpassed “The Dark Knight,” which previously held Nolan’s domestic box-office record with $534.9 million, without adjusting for inflation.
“The Odyssey” also earned $68 million internationally, driven by ticket sales in China and South Korea, bringing its worldwide total to $1.4 billion.
Other new releases posted smaller openings. Jason Statham’s “Mutiny” debuted at No. 6 with $7.5 million from 2,703 theaters, while “Spa Weekend” earned $3.1 million from 2,009 locations.
“The Magic Faraway Tree,” starring Andrew Garfield, opened outside the top 10 with $1.4 million from 1,611 theaters.
“Tony,” a film about young Anthony Bourdain, earned $5 million from 1,652 theaters.
The summer box office has generated an estimated $4.4 billion in North American ticket sales through the Labor Day period, placing the season among the four highest-grossing summers on record.
Overall ticket sales for 2026 have surpassed $7 billion, up about 20.4% from 2025 but about 7.1% below 2019 levels.
