MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Thursday highlighted the role of space science and technology in helping the Philippines prepare for disasters, protect the environment, and support development.

Speaking to government, academic, and industry stakeholders, Marcos said satellites and geospatial tools help track extreme weather, monitor flood- and landslide-prone areas, and guide early warning systems and disaster response. He added that satellite data also aids in assessing damage after disasters, supporting relief efforts, and planning recovery.

Marcos noted that space technology can improve resource mapping, environmental monitoring, agriculture, and urban planning. It can also help monitor forests, coasts, and marine areas and improve connectivity in remote communities.

He emphasized training and research in space science to build Filipino experts and encouraged collaboration between government agencies, universities, and the private sector. Marcos also said the Philippines will continue to work with other countries to share data and improve disaster preparedness.

The President said space programs will be aligned with national priorities, including climate action, food security, and inclusive growth, while promoting innovation and public-private partnerships.
