SOUTH KOREA — Former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun was arrested for charges of insurrection after allegations surrounding President Yoon Suk Yeol’s brief declaration of martial law.
The Seoul Central District Court confirmed the arrest early Wednesday.
President Yoon declared Martial law a week ago but was met with resistance from within the government and civil society.
This opposition eventually forced President Yoon to revoke the martial law order.
His attempt to maintain control faced backlash, with lawmakers taking decisive steps to reinstate civilian rule.
This led to an expedited session within the National Assembly, resulting in strong measures to curtail executive powers and restore stability.
In addition to Kim’s arrest, two top police officials have also been detained.
