Users in various regions reported that Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp experienced outages on Wednesday afternoon.

The disruption began around 1 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, affecting a number of users who took to alternative social media platforms to express their frustrations and confusion.

Meta Platforms Incorporated, the parent company of these major social media services, confirmed the service interruptions.

Meta representatives stated that their engineering teams were aware of the issues and were working diligently to restore service as quickly as possible.

Users experienced difficulties accessing the platforms, with many unable to load pages or send messages.

Downdetector, a popular website that tracks service outages, registered significant spikes in user reports during the early afternoon.

It indicated that the outages were not confined to a specific geographic location, affecting users in multiple regions globally.

According to Downdetector, close to 70,000 reports were logged for Instagram alone by mid-afternoon, with similar figures for Facebook and WhatsApp.

Other social media networks experienced an uptick in traffic as individuals sought updates and information about the situation.

Telegram and X saw increased engagement from users affected by the outage. These platforms provided a temporary refuge for individuals seeking community connections and social interaction typically facilitated by Meta’s applications.
