Singapore eyes overland evacuation of nationals from Bahrain

SINGAPORE — Singapore’s embassy in Riyadh is exploring a possible land evacuation for Singaporeans in Bahrain as tensions escalate in the Middle East.

In a Facebook advisory posted March 2, the embassy said it is gauging interest in transporting Singaporeans by bus from Bahrain to Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh — a five-hour journey — where international flights to Singapore remain available. However, officials noted travelers may need to wait several days for available seats.

The embassy clarified that the move is not yet confirmed and is dependent on demand.

Meanwhile, the Singapore embassy in Abu Dhabi and its consulate-general in Dubai advised Singaporeans in the United Arab Emirates to shelter in place but acknowledged that traveling by land to Oman’s Muscat International Airport is another option for those who must leave urgently.

Officials warned that ongoing missile and drone strikes in the UAE pose risks to overland travel and urged citizens to confirm flights before departing, monitor developments closely, and prepare for possible delays.

The advisories come after partial airspace closures across the region following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, which have disrupted flights and stranded thousands of travelers.
