Vice President Sara Duterte issued a stern warning to the Marcos family last Friday, stating that she might consider exhuming the remains of their patriarch, Ferdinand Marcos Sr., if attacks against her persist. This statement was made in the context of escalating tensions between the Duterte and Marcos political families, both of which are influential in the Philippines.

The warning from Duterte adds a dramatic layer to the ongoing discord between these two powerful clans. Although President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Vice President Duterte have been publicly allied since the 2022 elections, underlying tensions appear to have surfaced. The recent comments from Duterte suggest that these tensions have reached new heights.

The issue of Ferdinand Marcos Sr.’s burial has been a contentious topic in the Philippines since his remains were brought back to the country from Hawaii in 1993. After years of public debate, his body was interred at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery) in November 2016. The burial was met with protests from various groups who opposed honoring the former president in such a manner due to his controversial regime, marked by allegations of human rights abuses and corruption.

Vice President Duterte’s remark highlights the intensity of the current political rivalry. She emphasized that continued personal attacks from the Marcos camp would not be tolerated. Her warning was particularly directed at Senator Imee Marcos, the sister of President Marcos Jr. The details of the alleged attacks on Duterte have not been widely publicized, but the Vice President’s response indicates the seriousness with which she regards the matter.

The Duterte-Marcos alliance was seen as a formidable force in the last national elections, with Duterte joining Marcos Jr. on the campaign trail, leading to their respective victories as Vice President and President. However, political alliances in the Philippines are often complex and fraught with personal dynamics that can shift rapidly.

Observers note that the current discord may affect the political landscape as both families have strong followings and hold significant sway over public opinion. The Marcos family has a longstanding political legacy, with Ferdinand Marcos Sr. having served as president from 1965 to 1986. His administration is both reviled for its alleged abuses and praised by supporters who view it as a time of development. On the other hand, the Duterte family has risen to prominence more recently, with Sara Duterte’s father, Rodrigo Duterte, having served as president from 2016 to 2022.

The Vice President’s warning was delivered publicly and has sparked various reactions across the political spectrum. Some political analysts suggest that this could be a strategic move to assert her position and influence. Others speculate about the potential implications for the unity of the current administration.

Public response to the news has been mixed. Supporters of Duterte have expressed approval of her strong stance, while critics have voiced concerns regarding the nature of her threat. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how it will impact the broader political dynamics in the Philippines.
