SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio City Council has approved up to $2 million in funding to design a new community center and park on the Northeast Side, marking the first such facility in District 2.
The project, approved during a March 5 council meeting, will be located near Eisenhauer Road and Midcrown Drive, in an area surrounded by apartments, suburban neighborhoods, and a Pre-K 4 SA preschool.
Officials said the center will include an affordable housing component and is intended to address the lack of city resources and green space in the area, which has been heavily affected by industrial development. In a news release, District 2 Councilman Jalen McKee-Rodriguez said the project aims to restore green space lost amid the concentration of warehouses and industrial facilities.
While the project is still in its design phase, city leaders hope it will provide both recreational opportunities and community services to residents of the Northeast Side.
