South Korea’s former President Yoon Suk Yeol was detained on Thursday for a second time due to his involvement in declaring martial law.

The Seoul Central District Court ordered his arrest, citing concerns about potential evidence tampering during investigations into allegations of insurrection.

The detention places Yoon in a solitary cell near Seoul as authorities continue their probe into the political crisis he instigated on December 3, when he attempted to undermine civilian governance by sending armed forces to assert control.

Special prosecutor Cho Eun-suk, leading the investigations, aims to expand the case against Yoon to include charges of obstruction of official duties, abuse of power, and document forgery.

This latest arrest comes four months after Yoon’s release from prior detention linked to similar rebellion charges. If convicted on these charges, Yoon faces the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence.
