HOUSTON — The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo temporarily closed its carnival Saturday night after videos showed large groups fighting in crowded areas, prompting guests to run and causing confusion among families.
Witnesses described chaos as punches and kicks were exchanged before security and law enforcement responded. “I seen the dude throw the punch, and then after that it was just — I didn’t know who was with who,” said Damion Potts, who recorded the incident. Once authorities arrived, the situation began to settle.
In a statement, rodeo officials said:
“Out of an abundance of caution, the carnival closed early to prioritize the safety of our guests. Law enforcement and on-site security responded immediately. We are taking proactive steps to help ensure this type of incident does not occur again and to maintain a safe environment for our guests.”
Videos of the fight quickly circulated on Instagram and TikTok, raising concerns for families attending the event. Some viewers also reacted negatively online, with Damion Potts reporting he received threats after posting footage.
Despite the incident, some attendees said they still feel safe returning. “We want to be out with the grown folk who have a good head on their shoulders… come to the carnival, come to the rodeo to have a good time,” said Jamarion Bolden.
Rodeo officials said they are reviewing security measures and working with law enforcement to prevent similar incidents in the future, emphasizing that safety remains their top priority.
