MANILA, Philippines – Religious leaders and civil society organizations in the Philippines will hold a three-day prayer vigil from June 9 to 11 to call on the Senate to initiate the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, organizers announced Friday.

Fr. Flavie Villanueva revealed the event during an interview with Radio Veritas, stating that the vigil aims to demonstrate unity among Filipinos in urging the Senate to proceed with the trial without delay.

The gathering will take place at a designated public venue to allow maximum participation, according to organizers. Community leaders and religious figures will lead the activities, which include prayers, reflections, and public appeals for justice and government accountability.

Organizers invited participants from various sectors to join the vigil, which they described as a peaceful expression of concern over issues of truth, justice, and ethical governance. They said the event underscores the importance of transparency and adherence to democratic processes.

“The corruption of truth undermines justice,” Villanueva said. He added that the vigil seeks divine guidance for leaders and aims to remind lawmakers of their constitutional responsibility.

Participants plan to use the event to advocate for the prompt start of the impeachment proceedings. Organizers emphasized that the vigil will highlight the role of faith-based and community-led initiatives in addressing national issues.
