VATICAN CITY — Pope Leo XIV will conduct his inaugural mass as pontiff on Friday, following his election as the first American leader of the Catholic Church.
Cardinals elected Chicago-born Robert Francis Prevost as the new pope on Thursday during a secret conclave held in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel.
Pope Leo XIV is now responsible for leading the 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.
The mass will take place at 11:00 am (0900 GMT) on Friday in the Sistine Chapel.
Pope Leo XIV, aged 69, will celebrate this private mass with cardinals.
The Vatican will broadcast the mass, during which Pope Leo XIV will deliver his first homily as the pope.
