Pope Leo XIV issued a strong message emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy on all forms of abuse within the Catholic Church, including sexual, spiritual, and abuse of authority.

He underscored the importance of transparent processes and the need to listen carefully to victims.

He also praised the role of journalists, stating that defending ethical and independent journalism is essential to justice and democracy.

The Pope emphasized that a free press acts as a necessary check on power and reinforces transparency within institutions.

His remarks were made in connection with a tribute to investigative journalist Paola Ugaz, who exposed abuses within the Catholic organization Sodalitium Christianae Vitae.

The Pope said her work reflected the Church’s mission for truth and justice.

He warned that attempts to silence journalists weaken democracy and reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to protecting minors and vulnerable adults.

Recently, the Vatican convened the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, during which Pope Leo XIV reiterated his focus on survivor-centered reforms and consistent safeguarding practices across the Church.

Church leaders in Europe, including the Archbishop of Brussels, voiced support for the Pope’s position and expressed confidence in his leadership.
