Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is running for the U.S. Senate, and his wife, Angela Paxton, agreed to unseal certain records in their ongoing divorce case after eight media organizations challenged the court’s decision to keep the documents confidential.
The agreement followed a motion from a coalition of news outlets seeking public access to records that had been sealed in the divorce proceedings. The media organizations argued that filings involving a statewide elected official and Senate candidate raise issues of public interest that warrant transparency.
Attorneys representing the media coalition asked the court to review the sealing orders and release the records unless specific legal grounds justify continued confidentiality. The news organizations intervened in the case for the limited purpose of challenging the restrictions on public access.
Lawyers for Ken Paxton and Angela Paxton informed the court that the couple would not oppose the request and agreed to unseal at least some of the disputed documents.
