Palawan, a UNESCO biosphere reserve known for its unique biodiversity, has been a focal point for mining activities in recent years.
Local officials emphasized that the moratorium reflects Palawan’s long-term commitment to sustainable development, balancing economic growth with environmental preservation.
However, some in the mining sector have raised concerns about the economic impact of the ban, noting that mining has provided jobs and revenues for local communities.
The provincial government, though, has indicated that alternative economic activities, such as eco-tourism and agriculture, will be prioritized.
