Northeast Houston residents now have a new community support site during disasters. On Friday, Reliant Energy and Houston Habitat for Humanity opened a resiliency hub in the Robins Landing neighborhood, offering power access, ice, and other essential resources during emergencies.

Located at 8811 Robins Landing, the hub allows residents to charge cell phones, borrow portable power stations, and store perishable items in a large freezer. Reliant Energy provided $50,000 to convert a former model home into the facility, equipping it with solar panels, charging stations, an ice machine, and backup power equipment.

Houston Habitat for Humanity CEO Allison Hay said the hub responds to neighborhood requests for a safe, reliable place to access electricity during storms or power outages. The area, ZIP code 77078, was among the hardest hit during Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

Residents like Lisa McWashington say the hub will be critical for households with medical needs. Her daughter, Ashley, relies on devices such as a nebulizer and electric vest that require consistent power. The hub’s portable power stations will allow families to maintain essential equipment during outages.

The Robins Landing hub opens during declared emergencies and is being promoted as a model for how community organizations and private companies can work together to strengthen disaster preparedness in vulnerable neighborhoods.
