GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — The Philippine Consulate General joined the Filipino Leaders Coalition of North Texas (FILCON) on Saturday in commemorating the 127th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence.

The event, held at Asia Times Square in Grand Prairie, featured a wreath-laying ceremony in honor of Filipino and American World War II veterans. Organizers also recognized descendants of veterans, including Col. Kenneth Sumrall, who served under General Douglas MacArthur and currently resides in Fort Worth.

Following the ceremony, a cultural program showcased traditional performances, a fashion show, and a tribute to Filipino sculptors Nixxo Castrillo and Elaine Bordeaux for their contributions to the arts.

In his remarks, Consul General Gunther Sales emphasized that Philippine independence is not only a historical milestone but a continuing responsibility to uphold the nation’s dignity and welfare.

Local officials in attendance included Arlington Mayor Jim Ross, Carrollton Mayor Steve Babick, and Grand Prairie Mayor Pro Tem Jorja Clemson, who read a proclamation signed by Grand Prairie Mayor Ron Jensen commemorating the occasion.
