North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited a nuclear submarine construction plant on Wednesday in the northeastern port city of Sinpo, state media reported Thursday.

During the visit, he received a message from Russian President Vladimir Putin praising the “invincible friendship” between North Korea and Russia.

Kim toured the shipyard, where officials briefed him on nuclear-capable submarine development and plans to improve underwater combat capabilities. He inspected hull assembly areas, propulsion systems, and weapons compartments, and directed staff to accelerate research, production, and modernization, including stealth and endurance improvements.

Putin’s message, delivered during the visit, emphasized political, economic, and military cooperation and joint efforts against what Moscow and Pyongyang call external pressure and sanctions. Kim expressed appreciation and confirmed plans to further develop ties with Russia, including defense cooperation.

North Korea and Russia have increased high-level exchanges in recent years, including summits and defense site visits. Western governments and the United Nations have accused North Korea of supplying military equipment to Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Moscow and Pyongyang deny illegal transfers but acknowledge closer cooperation.
