New Texas law permits use of fracking wastewater on crops

Governor Greg Abbott signed a law permitting oil and gas companies to treat and reuse fracking wastewater, including possible use for crop irrigation or discharge into waterways.

The measure aims to address Texas’s water shortage by promoting recycling. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller supports the law if strict treatment and safety standards are met, emphasizing the importance of clean water for farming.

However, some farmers and environmental advocates, like Johnson County’s Dana Ames, warn about the risks of contaminants, including “forever chemicals,” and question the state’s ability to regulate them.

The law also limits legal liability for companies unless gross negligence occurs, which critics say reduces accountability.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality will oversee regulation and treatment processes as the law is implemented.
